Patellar mobilization is used on clients that have a poorly tracking patella. Tracking issues can be caused by bad gait mechanics (usually related to weakness), but it can also be caused by pathologies such as poor alignment or arthritis.
While mobilization is very effective, the neuromuscular benefits don’t have a long-term carry over to activity because mobilization is only done a few times a week for a short period of time.
Rigid taping is a great technique that can simulate a mobilization during functional activities. This study found that taping improved function and showed a decrease in pain symptoms. The tape provides alignment correction as well as activation to the mechanoreceptors at the joint.
If you have tracking issues, discuss this option with your PT at your next visit!
