Do I Have to Stop Running?

Do I Have to Stop Running?

Wendy Winn, PT, OCS

“Help! I have an injury! Do I have to stop running?” Fear! Panic! What about my race?

You’re not alone. Most people who call us for help feel the same way.

The good news: maybe not!

We’ll know right away if you need to stop running. If not, we’ll safely modify your plan.

Our general rule of thumb is to stop running when we suspect a stress fracture or a pre-stress fracture. This is (obviously) because we do not want you to break your bones.

For most other diagnoses, we modify your training plan.

At Custom Performance, we love running as much as you do! We also have the skills and training to know when too much might be too much. Our experts are up-to-date on the latest running research.

“We keep runners running” is our motto – because we do – whether you are injured or not! We know running is important to you. We care about your goals and have a signature approach to PT to keep you going.

Our approach:

At Custom, we look at the whole person; not just your injury. We ask questions that impact your life and performance, not only the ”too much too soon”  training questions, but the bigger life questions. How much time are you on your feet per day? What is your stress level like?

How are we balancing energy and recovery? Why do you run? All questions that impact a runner.

Whether you are coming to see us for knee pain, IT band syndrome, hip pain, low back pain, or a muscle strain, we look at your whole body. We look at your running biomechanics day one, something that other clinics put off. We want to see the whole picture.

Fun Fact: this is the reason all of our PTs are RRCA certified run coaches! We modify plans all the time and want to give you superior recommendations.

Still have questions? No problem. We are happy to chat any time, for free, you can schedule a call with us here. We are here to help keep runners running, and we want to help you.
