As July approaches, many NYC runners are beginning to think about the start of NYC Marathon Training. As a physical therapist that specializes in working with runners, here is how I would approach marathon training.
NEW RUNNER
New to the marathon & new to running.
- Running: 3-4 days/week
- Max Milage: 35-40 miles/week
- Cross-Training: 0-1x/week
- Strength Training: 1-2x/week
NEW TO THE MARATHON
New to the marathon but not new to running.
- Running: 4-5 days/week
- Max Milage: 40-50 miles/week
- Cross-Training: 0-2x/week
- Strength Training: 1-2x/week
VETERAN MARATHONER:
Has run at least 1 marathon.
- Running: 5-6 days/week
- Max Milage: 50+ miles/week
- Cross-Training: 0-2x/week
- Strength Training: 1-2x/week
It’s important to note that there are so many ways to structure marathon training. What works for one person may not work for the next person. If you are looking for an individualized plan that is tailored to your skill level, goals, and schedule; book a phone consultation with me so we can discuss more.
